4(April 5th)Integrated Course of American English Listening and Vocabulary Session 4 Warm-up The Daffodils ---William Wordsworth I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high over vales and hills When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the Milky Way They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay Ten thousand I saw at a glance Tossing their heads in sprightly dance
The waves beside them danced, but they Outdid the sparking waves in glee A poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company: I gazed and gazed but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought.
For often, when on my couch lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

Keeping one’s good health has become a common part of people’s life and life expectancy and infant mortality have always aroused the greatest concern. What impresses us most is that in developing countries, people’s life expectancy extents averagely to 60 years in 1990, 20 years longer than in 1960s, while the infant mortality has decreased by well over 50% during the same period. As to me, the possible contributing factors will be highlighted as follows:
Among all the reasons listed the improvement of living standards plays an important part. That is to say, with the development of economy, we are provided with abundant food and enough nutrition. What is more, medical system in recent years has been improved considerably. For example, more advanced medicines are developed and lots of people are saved from previously incurable diseases.
In brief, when talking about the future of our life, I believe that we can live longer and healthier, given people’s awareness of health has been strengthened and better medical equipments and medicine have been springing up thanks to development of science and technology.

However, some people find it hard to say no since they hold that helping each other is well established as a traditional virtue. As to me, responding to the requests for help without deliberate consideration will sometimes does harm to us and the major reasons are listed as follows. Firstly, if you cannot keep your promise in that the request is beyond your ability, you will be considered dishonest and unreliable.
Secondly, if you agree to unreasonable requests, it will spoil your principles of doing things and it may also do harm to innocent people. For example, personnel officials who promise to offer a job to his unqualified friend make the employment system unfair. 1. Thirdly, if you give help to a criminal, you may end up committing crime as well. 2. A case in point is that some people who help their criminal friends to cover the fact or to escape from being punished will receive well-deserved punishment. 3. As what is stated above, it goes without saying that it will do harm to ourselves as well as others if we assist in something we are not supposed to do, although we should lend a helping hand whenever it is really needed. 4. After all, to say no doesn’t necessarily imply we have no intention of being helpful. 5. The point is that neither should we hesitate to say no to people with ulterior motive. Alternative pattern 6. It goes without saying that participating in sports will bring about benefits, be they physical, spiritual or social. A brief look at the reasons might be presented as follows:
Firstly, participating in sports can develop one’s temperament and character spiritually. For example, if a person goes in for a kind of sport in which a team is involved, he needs to learn how to cooperate with others and how to adjust himself in emergence. Secondly, participating in sports can cultivate one’s sense of humor and dignity. Athletes taking part in Olympic Games are such examples and those who won the games are admired as heroes. Lastly, participating in sports can hold people together and thus can indirectly stimulate the social development.
Because sports are activities in which all participants enjoy absolute equality without discrimination in any aspect, they can hold together people of different strata in society.
Accordingly, it is not difficult for us to come to the conclusion that physical exercise brings us great benefits. People from all walks of life should be encouraged to take up some kind of sport to help maintain a physically and mentally sound body and enrich their lives.
Examples: Reading Preferences Reading preferences of students in an American University in 2002
1. (点题) Reading regularly has long become a common part of people’s life and reading preference has always aroused the greatest concern. 2. (指出图标中亮点或总体趋势) What impresses us most is, according to the table, the percentage of book circulation in an American university library, which shows that the circulation of popular fictions, general nonfictions, science/technology/education books and art/literature/poetry books accounts for 65.9%, 18.2%, 10.8% and 5.1% respectively. 3. That is to say, thanks to its appealing plot, popular fictions attract more people than other types of books do. 6. What is more, science and art books which require readers’ knowledge on relevant fields are highly demanding. 7. For example, it’s hard for students majoring in chemistry to understand Browning’s poems, and vice versa. 8. When talking about my reading preference, I think I prefer to science books. 9. On one the other hand, in order to deepen what I’m specializing in, I need read more books relevant to my major. 10. On the other hand, these books can also broaden our horizons. 11. In brief, college students should choose books according to their interests and needs. Is a test of spoken English necessary? Reading extensively or selectively? Should firecrackers be banned? Will fast food replace traditional food?
(The following reasons can account for my preferences) 8. Example Is a test of spoken English necessary? 1. Different people have different views on whether a test of spoken English should be include as an optional component of the College English Test. 2. Some prefer to have such a test, whereas others tend to decline any kind of tests of spoken English. 3. As to me, I agree with the first statement.
4. Of course, a test of spoken English is very difficult to handle and test time is not long enough to fully display contestants’ ability to speak. 5. For example, if a candidate draws a topic which he or she is not familiar with, it’s hard to show his or her command of spoken English. 6. Additionally, oral test is to some extent subjective and we cannot say for sure every examiner will always make fair judgment.
1. On the contrary, without such a test, students would loss their appetite for practicing spoken English. 8. The following reasons can account for my preferences. 9. The main reason is that such a test enhances college students’ awareness of the importance of spoken English. 10. A good example to illustrate is that several years ago, college students only stressed reading and writing skills, ignoring to build up listening and speaking ability. 11. For another, a certificate of such a test will arm you with a plus when it comes to job hunting.
12. On balance, each side of the controversy makes sense. 13. Personally speaking, a test of spoken English should be advocated so as to inject vigor into College English teaching. Recently the issue of whether or not school children should wear uniforms has been in the limelight and has aroused wide concern in the public. Those who oppose it argue that uniforms prevent children’s personalities from developing, whereupon others maintain that uniforms may make children unified. Both sides of the question are well supported by sound reasons.
A number of causes may account for the opposition towards school uniform. Firstly, it is an important stage for children to develop their own personalities, during which adults should try to provide more room for their choices. Therefore they should not be forced to wear uniforms. Secondly, in choosing different clothes to wear, they may cultivate their aesthetic ability so that they may come to sense and appreciate beauty in their living. Thirdly, when forced to wear uniforms, some children may easily foster psychological rebellion.
But conflicting voices are gaining weight, whose supporters assert that it is significant for adults to render proper guidance over children’s growth in this period. Since people are living in a society, children should be trained to have collectivism and learn to abide by the rules and regulations. Furthermore, school uniforms make the appearance of a unit in order and neat, which may remind the children to refrain themselves from misconduct. Lastly, school uniforms give the children a sense of belonging, which maybe be positive for the development of their personalities.
There is probably a little bit of truth in both arguments and the opinions stated by both sides make sense, and consequently, it’s hard to choose the best of them. Personally, I second the former in favor to the latter and hold that young children should grow up in a more natural environment.
